Vikisözlük sorunları

Kurulduğundan bu yana âdeta yerinde sayan Vikisözlük 2017'den bu yana çok fazla atılım gösterdi. Çok fazla değişiklikler oldu ve daha iyi bir proje hâline geldi Vikisözlük, emeği geçen herkese sonsuz teşekkürler. Ancak bazı konularda hâlâ sıkıntıları var. Bunlar için nasıl bir çözüm üretebileceğimizi tartışalım istiyorum Sabri76, HastaLaVi2 ve Uncitoyen.

Söz türleri

Vikisözlük başlarda Türkçe takıntılı birilerinin tekelindeymiş sanki. İsim, fiil, sıfat, zarf gibi Arapça karşılıklar yerine ad, eylem, ön ad, belirteç gibi özellikle Türkçe karşılıklar kullanılmış. Hatta ifade sözcüğüne karşılık sözce diye bir söz türü uydurulmuş. Uydurulmuş diyorum çünkü böyle bir söz türü yok. Vikisözlük âdeta millî bir sözlük hâline gelmiş. Söz türlerini maddelerde AWB veya bot yardımıyla değiştirsek bile konuyla ilgili kategorileri, şablonları ve modülleri de değiştirmemiz gerekecek. Bu iş de ta en başlarda halledilmeliydi belki ama geç kalmış sayılabilir miyiz? Hâlâ bir umut var mıdır? Zararın neresinden dönersek kâr mıdır? @Turgut46, merhaba. Öncelikle bu konudan önce size önceden silmiş olduğumuz {{anlamlar}} şablonunu hatırlatmak istiyorum. Bu şablon da Vikisözlük'ün tüm maddelerinde mevcuttu, ve uzunca bir çalışmanın ardından kullanımı tamamen yok edildi. Yani buna benzer fakat çok daha kapsamlı bir konudan söz etmekteyiz. Geçen defa 1 yıl gibi bir süre aldı diye hatırlıyorum (tekrar kontrol edebiliriz), sadece anlamlar şablonunu kaldırmak. Bu defa tüm maddeleri aynı şekilde tekrar tarayacağız. Tabi botla bu süre çok daha kısa sürer, fakat benim şu anda çok yoğun geçen bir dönemim ve böyle uzun bir sürece girebilecek durumda olduğumu düşünmüyorum. Eğer teknik kısmıyla ilgilenecek vakit ayırabilecek biri varsa, seve seve yardımcı olarak rol alabilirim. Fakat yine de çok kısa sürede bu değişiklik tamamlanabilecek gibi olursa ben girişme taraftarıyım. Turgut46'nın görüşü çok kıymetli ancak ilköğretim derslerinden hatırladığım kadarıyla belirteç ve ön ad konusunda sadece o düzeyde kalan bir dile yerleştirme çabasının varlığı aşikar. Günlük hayatta "adın ne", "hangi sıfatla söylüyorsun", "bu eylemler uygun değil" gibi kullanımlar mevcut. Burada "ön ad" sözcüğünün yıllardır bir türlü yerleşmediğini düşünüyorum. Vikisözlük olarak bizim de dile sözcük yerleştirme gibi bir çabamız da olamayacağına göre "ön ad" sözcüğünün "sıfat" ile değiştirilmesini destekliyorum. Ancak "zarf"-"belirteç" konusunda kararsızım. Zarf sözcüğünün aynı zamanda mektup zarfı olarak da kullanılması bu sözcüğü belirteçe göre daha avantajlı konuma sokuyor ve bu nedenle sağlıklı değerlendirme yapamıyoruz. Bu arada dikkat çekmemişsiniz ancak "adıl" sözcüğünün "zamir" ile, "ilgeç" sözcüğünün ise "edat" ile değiştirilmesini destekliyorum. @Sabri76 belirteç de dile yerleşmemiş bir sözcük olduğundan kaldırılması gerekir diye düşünüyorum. Ayrıca, HastaLaVi2, bu tür değişiklikleri yapmak gerçekten çok mu zordur? Madde bazında demiyorum, modüller ve şablonlar bakımından diyorum. Kategoriler

Vikisözlük'e katkıda bulunduğumdan beri gözlemlediğim bir sorun da kategorilerdeki aşırı birikmeler. Mesela Kategori:Adlar kategorisinin tek özelliği içinde sadece adların bulunması. Çeşitli dillerdeki adlar tek bir kategoriye yığılmış. Şimdi böyle bir kategori ne işe yarayacak? Veya Kategori:Matematik mesela? Anlamsız bir yığılma var. Bu tür kategorileri dillere göre göre ayırmamız gerekiyor. Türkçe adlar veya Türkçede matematik gibi kategoriler herkes için daha kullanışlı olur. O nedenle bu tür genel kategorileri maddelerden kaldıralım ve dillere özel kategorilere yönelelim. --Turgut46 ^✉ 11.18, 12 Kasım 2021 (UTC)

Buna katılıyorum, bunun düzeltilmesi kolay. Zaten tüm kategoriler modüller ile yönetiliyor artık. Gerekli düzenlemeleri yaptığımda birkaç gün içerisinde tüm bu kategoriler boşalır. Ayrıca zaten bu bahsettiğiniz tüm maddeler dillerindeki kategorilerde de mevcut. Ama bu kategoriler yine de durabilir belki. Yine özellikle Türkçe karşılıklar seçilmiş olsa da bu tür başlıklarda herhangi bir itirazım yok. Yalnız "Uğradığı değişimler" başlığı yerine farklı bir karşılık kullanmamız gerekiyor. Örneğin Fransızca global sözcüğü Türkçe dâhil birçok dile olduğu gibi geçmiş, herhangi bir değişime uğramamış. Veya Farsça asıllı بیابان‎ (beyâbân) veya Arapça asıllı صَحْرَاء‎ (ṣaḥrāʾ) sözcüğü Osmanlı Türkçesine yine olduğu gibi geçmiş. Herhangi bir değişime uğramamış. Çeviriler

Thank you for starting a most interesting discussion! I don't speak Turkish. I came here by chance. In Swedish Wiktionary I had just completed the work to rename a language: "Vitryska" (White Russian, Beyaz Rusça) was changed to "Belarusiska" (3000 articles updated, 160 categories renamed). I thought this would take a long time, but it was completed within a week. So I took a look at Turkish Wiktionary. For me, it is comfortable to use the Latin alphabet. I don't dare to look closer at Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, or even Greek Wiktionary (but I am familiar with Cyrillic).

So I started to look at translations in Turkish Wiktionary, and there is a mess. Layers upon layers of old changes, some manual, some by bot. I compiled some historic statistics in Vikisözlük:İstatistikler and it is clear that tr.wiktionary was very big very early due to a "TDK" import (in 2007?). Some user(s) have also added many Finnish translations. After two weeks and 26,000 bot edits, I think the translations have become a lot better. All relevant Üst calls now have tip=çeviriler, which activates the Javascript gadget for adding new translations. The gadget has been improved (by HastaLaVi2) and now sorts new entries in correct alphabetic order (well, most of the time). The separate sections for Turk languages (Türk lehçeleri) have been removed from many articles, and all translations are integrated under one heading Çeviriler (most often in alphabetic order). I have removed "Modern Yunanca" and "Hollandca" and kept "Yunanca" and "Felemenkçe", which is also what the Javascript gadget will add.

Just from reading the existing Wiktionary, I had concluded that "çeviri" means translation, "eylem" means verb, etc. And the notion that verbs might be "fiil" instead ... boggles my mind! I hope I can contribute to make Turkish Wiktionary more useful. I run a bot and I can analyze XML database dumps to get advanced statistics. I have a long experience from English, Russian and Swedish Wiktionary, so I can compare what works and what doesn't. I have been editing here since 2017 I think (might be 2018), and with a couple of people Turgut46 just mentioned above, we have made Turkish wiktionary a better, a good version of itself. • At first, he talked about, well, we have two names for every lemma (or word or figure of speech maybe?, we call it 'söz türü' in Turkish). For example, noun means both 'ad' and 'isim' in Turkish. This is because 'isim' comes from Arabic and 'ad' is a Turkish word. From years ago, Wiktionary users decided to wipe out arabic-derived lemma names from usage, and used the only Turkish ones insted. But in real life, 'isim' is the common one, nobody will understand at first if you use 'ad', really. The same thing applies to 'verb', which means both 'eylem' and 'fiil'. • In English Wiktionary there is a category named en:Category:Mathematics, and this lists every language's mathematics-related word-categories. In here, we have Kategori:Matematik which is the translation of mathematics, and we also have Kategori:Dillerine göre matematik, which means 'Mathematics by language'. Actually the second category here has the every language's mathematics-related word-categories. And the first one includes every language's mathematics-related words. That is why it has really many entries. And there is no point in having them all together. But the category tree is a little bit different in here. We are looking for a way out. I have seen a lot of red error messages, created when templates such as 'h', 'k', and 'IPA' do not specify a language code (dil=tr). I started to fix some of them, but soon found many more errors of different kinds. Many English and German words specify {{k|dil=tr|...}}. As soon as you lift a stone, there are some bugs creeping around underneath it. I decided to go back to translations, and wait with the other problems.

Yes, about the categories, I agree that the template tr-ad should only add the category for Turkish nouns, not the parent category for all nouns. And {{t|matematik|dil=it}} should only add the category for Italian mathematics, not the parent category for all mathematics. Some languages of Wiktionary (eg. ru.wiktionary) has a category for "mathematics by language" between category:mathematics and category:mathematics in Turkish. Capital letters in definitions

In many articles, the first word of the definition begins with an upper case letter, such as this:

This results in a red link. It should be lower case: [[fasulye]]. In my opinion, this is a problem that is serious and should be fixed with urgency. But you need to understand Turkish, to determine when it is appropriate. If the first word is a name (e.g. Türkçe), it should not be in lower case. --LA2 (mesaj) 12.01, 14 Kasım 2021 (UTC)

By the way, Türkçe is not noun. It is proper noun. Proper nouns start with capital letter in Turkish. There may be exceptions for two-word lemmas (example İngiliz anahtarı).

I think this needs manual edits and consideration, but you can use technical tools (XML dump or bot software) to find the pages by searching for lines that look like definitions, beginning with "#" or ":[1]", and where the first linked letter (after [[) is uppercase. Here are some examples:

Inflection tables

I see that some experiments have been made with templates such as şablon:sv-ad-tablo, şablon:sv-ad-g-tablo, şablon:sv-ad-c-er etc. (Kategori:İsveççe çekimleme tablosu şablonları). Inflection patterns of Swedish nouns is sometimes regular and easy, but sometimes have strange exceptions. To write a series of templates (or a module) to cover their logic is not trivial. The same goes for other languages, both Germanic and Slavic, and other parts of speech (verbs, adjectives). If tr.wiktionary attracts many more contributors, perhaps you will have the critical mass to make such inflection tables for some large languages (French, German) but not for all languages (Swedish, Danish, Polish, Dutch, ...). A much easier way is to just focus on the headword templates (başlık başı şablonları) such as şablon:de-ad with very few parameters and almost no internal logic at all. For nouns in Scandinavian languages, I have made such templates and started to use them: şablon:da-ad, şablon:no-ad, şablon:sv-ad. They have no internal logic at all. You have to specify explicitly what the two most commonly used inflections are: singular definite and plural indefinite. Larger heading on some articles

When I look at the article talaz, its heading is larger than other articles. When I look at the HTML source code (ctrl-U), the <h1> contains a <span class="Arab">... which is missing in other articles:

@LA2, well normally Arabic lemmas are shown in their own fonts to make them more readible, see ءاذان‎. This is coming from Modül:başlık başı which means headword. All lemmas start with ===Ad=== kind of title, and then has a headword template, and you can see all of them in Kategori:Başlık başı şablonları.

If we come to the reason, why entry talaz seems bigger than the others is because, Çağatayca is not a Latin-written language. It uses Arabic alphabet, but this entry is created out of a reading of a Çağatayca word, so when the original word of this 'reading' can be found, we can move the contents of Çağatayca from here to a new entry. Heceleme

I'm adding the dil= parameter to template calls such as heceleme. Many multi-word articles are coded with perhaps too few syllables, for example gökçe yazın is coded as 3 syllables, which I think is wrong. You can now easily find them in Kategori:Türkçe 3 heceli sözcükler. --LA2 (mesaj) 21.25, 3 Aralık 2021 (UTC)

Hmm, guess we will have to make some adjustments on the heceleme template. Because, users who added those templates, did not think of to separate the words, but we can actually separate them on the template logic and have the real result, because gökçe yazın is a 4-syllables word . ~ Z (m) 13.17, 5 Aralık 2021 (UTC)

Russian Wiktionary has a rather clumsy and ugly solution (word1=, word2=), for example in the article ru:добро пожаловать (Welcome!):

Şablon:IPA ve parametre ç=

Many pages specify:

:{{IPA|dil=tr|/radjasˈjon/}}, {{ç.}} {{IPA|dil=tr|/radjasjonˈlaɾ/}}

But {{IPA}} (which invokes Modül:IPA/şablonlar and Modül:IPA) has a parameter ç= for the plural form, to avoid calling the template twice. But the value of this parameter is not shown! Pages that use ç= are Alma, Almanca, Almanya, Atıl, Automobil, Branntwein, Brot, Einsturzgefahr, Feminist, Foto, Generator, Hunca, Kabil, Kalender, Kalender, Kaviar, Noah, Noah, Parkplatz, Präsident, Reis, Reis, Reise, Schatz, Schere, Seite, Togo, Tsatsiki, Zeit, abajur, abece, abiye, adam, adıl, anayasa, anlatım, anne, ayna, baba, bahçe, balık, barış, baykuş, belediye, bozmama, büyük, cevap, cuma, değer, domuz, düzen, düşmeme, elvan, etme, evsiz, eş, eşya, fatura, feminist, feminist, fiyat, gelir, geliştirme, gitme, grup, gök, göl, gün, hasar, heykel, hidayet, ifa, ihsan, ilim, ilkbahar, imam, indirme, is, isimsiz, iş, jeolog, jihad, kalma durumu, kara lahana, karbonat, kaz, kelime, koza, kâse, kış, mevsim, mezra, optimizasyon, orman, sabun, sanal yöre, senkretizm, sertifikasyon, sonbahar, ışınım. In fact, the page imam specifies:

@LA2, we used to have that parameter. But then I updated the module from English wiktionary, and the plural paramater is ignored. Actually, the IPA template should show the pronunciation of the word of the page, the plural form should not be present on the page, because it is another word, and it should be on its own entry. ~ Z (m) 12.57, 5 Aralık 2021 (UTC)

In Swedish Wiktionary, the policy is to keep inflected form entries (pages for plural forms) minimalistic. They never show definitions, etymology or pronunciation. They only point back to the main entry, e.g. sv:deklarationer (plural of deklaration). In this way, there are fewer pages to maintain. --LA2 (mesaj) 13.17, 5 Aralık 2021 (UTC)

You are humbly invited to participate in the Wiki Loves Folklore 2022 an international photography contest organized on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from different regions, including, folk creative activities and many more. It is held every year from the 1st till the 28th of February.

You can help in enriching the folklore documentation on Commons from your region by taking photos, audios, videos, and submitting them in this commons contest.

You can also organize a local contest in your country and support us in translating the project pages to help us spread the word in your native language.

Greetings from the EWOC Newsletter team and the education team at Wikimedia Foundation. We are very excited to share that we on tenth years of Education Newsletter (This Month in Education) invite you to join us by subscribing to the newsletter on your talk page or by sharing your activities in the upcoming newsletters. The Wikimedia Education newsletter is a monthly newsletter that collects articles written by community members using Wikimedia projects in education around the world, and it is published by the EWOC Newsletter team in collaboration with the Education team. These stories can bring you new ideas to try, valuable insights about the success and challenges of our community members in running education programs in their context.

If your affiliate/language project is developing its own education initiatives, please remember to take advantage of this newsletter to publish your stories with the wider movement that shares your passion for education. You can submit newsletter articles in your own language or submit bilingual articles for the education newsletter. For the month of January the deadline to submit articles is on the 20th January. We look forward to reading your stories.

The scope of the contest is focused on folk culture of different regions on categories, such as, but not limited to, folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, etc.

We would like to have your immense participation in the photographic contest to document your local Folk culture on Wikipedia. You can also help with the translation of project pages and share a word in your local language.

Several improvements around templates

Hello, from March 9, several improvements around templates will become available on your wiki:

• Fundamental improvements of the VisualEditor template dialog (1, 2),
• Improvements to make it easier to put a template on a page (3) (for the template dialogs in VisualEditor, 2010 Wikitext and New Wikitext Mode),
• and improvements in the syntax highlighting extension CodeMirror (4, 5) (which is available on wikis with writing direction left-to-right).

All these changes are part of the “Templates” project by WMDE Technical Wishes. We hope they will help you in your work, and we would love to hear your feedback on the talk pages of these projects.

International photographic contest Wiki Loves Folklore 2022 ends on 15th March 2022 23:59:59 UTC. This is the last chance of the year to upload images about local folk culture, festival, cuisine, costume, folklore etc on Wikimedia Commons. Watch out our social media handles for regular updates and declaration of Winners.

The writing competition Feminism and Folklore will run till 31st of March 2022 23:59:59 UTC. Write about your local folk tradition, women, folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folklore, and tradition, including ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional song and dance, folk plays, games, seasonal events, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology etc. on your local Wikipedia. Check if your local Wikipedia is participating

A special competition called Wiki Loves Falles is organised in Spain and the world during 15th March 2022 till 15th April 2022 to document local folk culture and Falles in Valencia, Spain. Learn more about it on Catalan Wikipedia project page.

The Vector 2022 skin as the default in two weeks?

Hello. I'm writing on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Web team. In two weeks, we would like to make the Vector 2022 skin the default on this wiki.

We have been working on it for the past three years. So far, it has been the default on more than 30 wikis, including sister projects, all accounting for more than 1 billion pageviews per month. On average 87% of active logged-in users of those wikis use Vector 2022.

It would become the default for all logged-out users, and also all logged-in users who currently use Vector legacy. Logged-in users can at any time switch to any other skins. No changes are expected for users of these skins.

About the skin

[Why is a change necessary] The current default skin meets the needs of the readers and editors as these were 13 years ago. Since then, new users have begun using Wikimedia projects. The old Vector doesn't meet their needs.

[Objective] The objective for the new skin is to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. It draws inspiration from previous requests, the Community Wishlist Surveys, and gadgets and scripts. The work helped our code follow the standards and improve all other skins. We reduced PHP code in Wikimedia deployed skins by 75%. The project has also focused on making it easier to support gadgets and use APIs.

[Changes and test results] The skin introduces a series of changes that improve readability and usability. The new skin does not remove any functionality currently available on the Vector skin.

• The sticky header makes it easier to find tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%.
• The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped to different sections of the page 50% more than with the old table of contents. It also looks a bit different on talk pages.
• The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on.
• The skin does not negatively affect pageviews, edit rates, or account creation. There is evidence of increases in pageviews and account creation across partner communities.

[Try it out] Try out the new skin by going to the appearance tab in your preferences and selecting Vector 2022 from the list of skins.

How can editors change and customize this skin?

It's possible to configure and personalize our changes. We support volunteers who create new gadgets and user scripts. Check out our repository for a list of currently available customizations, or add your own.

If no large concerns are raised, we plan on deploying in the week of October 3, 2022. If your community would like to request more time to discuss the changes, hit the button and write to us. We can adjust the calendar.

Community Wishlist Survey 2023 opens in January

The Community Wishlist Survey (CWS) 2023, which lets contributors propose and vote for tools and improvements, starts next month on Monday, 23 January 2023, at 18:00 UTC and will continue annually.

We are inviting you to share your ideas for technical improvements to our tools and platforms. Long experience in editing or technical skills is not required. If you have ever used our software and thought of an idea to improve it, this is the place to come share those ideas!

The dates for the phases of the Survey will be as follows:

• Phase 1: Submit, discuss, and revise proposals – Monday, Jan 23, 2023 to Sunday, Feb 6, 2023
• Phase 2: WMF/Community Tech reviews and organizes proposals – Monday, Jan 30, 2023 to Friday, Feb 10, 2023
• Phase 3: Vote on proposals – Friday, Feb 10, 2023 to Friday, Feb 24, 2023
• Phase 4: Results posted – Tuesday, Feb 28, 2023

If you want to start writing out your ideas ahead of the Survey, you can start thinking about your proposals and draft them in the CWS sandbox.
